– What is your relation to Cirith Ungol?
All the members in Atonement are huge fans of Cirith Ungol, we’ve been collecting and listening to their records since the early ’90s.
– Why did you choose Machacador Atómico (Atom Smasher)?
The music of Machacador Atómico it’s an 01:29 minutes Atonement original song, and the lyrics for the song are actually Cirith Ungol song titles. We did this as a tribute to the band, since we are fans, and at the time we did this song not too many people were paying attention to Cirith Ungol.
– Have you been doing a studio version of Machacador Atómico?
We recorded a studio version of “Machacador Atómico” at the demo tape “Asco, Miseria y Rencor” released by “Crimson Tide Productions” Co-released with “Gossos Negres de la Mort” in November 12th, 2019. Only 50 copies were pressed, White Pro Tapes with 2 panel J-Card.
– Have you played other songs by Cirith Ungol?
We have never played a cover of Cirith Ungol.
– Can you tell me the biography of Atonement from beginning until now?
In 2010 Salva started a Punk/Thrash band called ATONEMENT with Albert (drums) and Pinxao (bass/vocals). In 2011 Italiano offered himself to ATONEMENT to play bass so Pinxao could focus on vocals. After an edited tape rehearsal and several concerts, Pinxao confesses that he is no longer able to sing. The three remaining members decided not to look for a replacement and we divided the vocal duties between the three of us. With this line-up we recorded the demo tape “Plomo en las entrañas” in 2013. In 2016 Italiano suffered an episode of epicondylitis, which kept him away from playing bass, so he decided to focus on vocals and share some verses with Albert. Since Salva did not want to continue singing as the songs were more complex. To cover the bass player position, we called Pau, Albert’s brother. And with this line-up we recorded the 12” LP split “Death Lives!” with Maniac, Insulters, Omission and Körgull the Exterminator and the demo tape “Asco, Miseria y Rencor”.
In 2018 Albert tells us that for work reasons he has to leave Barcelona and will not be able to continue rehearsing. At this moment we consider not to continue as a band and we start to consider another project. Meanwhile, an old acquaintance returns to live in Barcelona and learns that ATONEMENT no longer exists, he is a drummer, has no band and loves ATONEMENT. We thought it was a good idea and we tried Sergio as a new drummer. With this line-up we recorded the split “Legacy of Terror” with Bestial Possession and the 12” e.p. “Muerte, perdición, destrucción y dolor”. In 2023 we recorded the CD and tape “Tiranos del Páramo”, which will be released in the Fall of 2024.
