The KLF is completely different music style than Cirith Ungol. It is no connection, Cirith Ungol was hard rock in 1970’s and metal in 1980’s. The KLF was electronic/ambient/stadium house. What is the connection on them then? Almost all people do not realize this:
- Cirith Ungol were disbanded in May 1992 – “I sold all our equipment and my drums paid off our bills and Cirith Ungol was officially deceased.”. So CU was frustration for May 1992. On 14 May 1992, the KLF announced their immediate retirement from the music industry and the deletion of their back catalogue. So The KLF was glad for May 1992.
- The KLF has the single “America: What Time Is Love?” with vocalist Glenn Hughes. He was member of e.g. Trapeze and Black Sabbath. Cirith Ungol has covered their song Jury and Keepin’ Time (Trapeze) and Hand of Doom (Black Sabbath).
- Glenn Hughes was also a member of Deep Purple. Michael Moorcock’s story about Deep Purple’s Stormbringer (1974), Cirith Ungol’s Stormbringer (2020) and Frost and Fire’s (1981) cover (https://cirithungol.org/media/elric-6-stormbringer/).
- Nick Coler worked with The KLF, Tokyo Blade, Angel Witch, Zodiac Mindwarp, Alice Cooper, etc. on e.g. Metal Blade, and so on.
- Falcon (Greg Lindstrom of Cirith Ungol) has also the song “Elfland’s Daughter”. Jimmy Cauty of The KLF has painted the cover “The King Of Elfland’s Daughter” (1977).
- The band name was Cirith Ungol. They took their name from the place Cirith Ungol, and who was the tower that Sam rescued Frodo from. The name Cirith Ungol means Sindarin for Spider’s Cleft or Pass of the Spider, from cirith (“cleft, pass”) and ungol (“spider”). Cirith Ungol is the bleak place where Frodo and Samwise fight the giant spider Shelob in Tolkien’s second installment in the trilogy, The Two Towers. Jimmy Cauty of The KLF has painted “Lord Of The Rings” (1976). Cirith Ungol’s lyrical approach was profoundly influenced by the high fantasy literature of J.R.R. Tolkien (from whose Hobbit and Lord of the Rings opus they derived their name).
- Night Demon (Jarvis of Cirith Ungol) – Year of the Demon (2022) has the the art work of Stonehenge. Cirith Ungol visited Stonehenge. Also, correct me if I was wrong, but I think it was the typeface is Stonehenge by Albie Fiore, seen on Citadel Miniatures. Adopted by Formatt for dry-transfer lettering and shown in their 1974 catalog as Stonehenge. Jimmy Cauty of The KLF has painted “Stonehenge” (1978).
- Rob of Cirith Ungol: In the Moorcock books the CHAOS sign is described as a symbol with many arrows pointing in all directions symbolizing the many possibilities of CHAOS! The symbol of LAW was one arrow pointing up. We liked the idea of CHAOS and I designed the logo based on my readings of the book. The whole thing about good and evil, chaos versus law, is a never ending struggle and we felt our music had the same duality about it. The KLF has also law/order and chaos, and inspired by The Illuminatus Trilogy.
- Cirith Ungol has pyramid, The KLF has pyramid.
and so on
