Robert Garven’s Cirith Ungol Secret Lair or Hidden Lair.

I loved that Ludwig set, every engineer and soundman hated it, and I got into an argument with one of my heroes Carmine Appice, over it. I use that on our first three albums “Frost & Fire”, “King of the Dead” , “One Foot in Hell”. There is a backstory to this. I had custom ordered a chrome plated Ludwig set which back then was the chrome wrapped on a white acrylic shell. It look beautiful but the problem I had was that the bearing edges were not treated properly and they were so sharp that they cut the drumheads out like a cookie cutter while I was playing on them. That was a long time ago, before the internet or drum groups, just hanging out at whatever music store you lived near, and I had no idea what a bearing edge profile was or should be!!! I wrote Ludwig a letter describing the issues I was having with them. One day my mother called out to me and said hey Rob there’s someone on the phone it sounds important. It was Mr. Ludwig and he told me that they had just started working on these stainless steel drums and he was going to send me an early prototype set. I was blown away but very excited and within a week the new set showed up! All he asked was I send that one back so they could look at it…

I can’t believe I ever got rid of that drum set it was amazing on so many levels. It was very strong, light, and it took hardly no maintenance to keep it beautiful. Once we were playing outside at a small festival and my drums were stacked in the parking lot and a small truck backed into one of my bass drums. I freaked out and ran over there and looked at it and it was barely a scratch on there. The DW ones that they were making were really heavy and I wanted a set of those but unlike most of you I only have room for one set! Those originals stainless steel Ludwig drums were very light, and could easily be lifed a around. I liked the way it sounded, an apparently John Bonham did also, but he like the vista lights too! HA

Somehow I ended up with another Ludwig said which was chrome wrapped around wood. It had massive toms se pic! I then got an endorsement deal from Pearl and got a beautiful red birch which really kicked ass. That story on that set was they said “Hey you play rock music, heavy metal we just started making a birch wood drums and they’re very loud, we think they may work for you”. They sounded good and you can hear them on our album Paradise Lost. It is long gone now too….
