Later the same day, Cirith Ungol also performed at Skatorama Satélite, a more traditional rock-concert venue, with a broader lineup of Mexican artists. This show had no formal dress code and catered to a larger rock audience.
On Saturday, April 17, 1982, Cirith Ungol performed two separate live shows in the Mexico City area:
Salón Nuevo Club Imperial — a formal dinner/gala concert with Chac Mool
Skatorama Satélite, Lomas Verdes — a late rock concert with multiple Mexican artists
Both performances were part of Cirith Ungol’s first international tour, arranged through Efrén Bernal (Flashman 2000), following his discovery of the band in Los Angeles earlier that year.

Music as an instrument of liberation is obviously not the same for everyone.
On the air: Rock 7.
Okay, now we are live.
Friends of Rock 7, good evening to all of you. Tonight… tonight Rock 7 has something very, very special, and that is the visit of the North American group Cirith Ungol. They are here, they come directly from Los Angeles, California. They brought records to give away, we have stickers, so we are going to spend a very, very nice night with a North American group.
This gives you an idea that Rock 7 is starting to have a certain presence, that it is being noticed by some people, and proof of this is that groups like these are visiting us here in the studio.
Right now we have the members of Cirith Ungol with us, and we are going to talk a bit with them so that you can get to know them better.
First of all, welcome to Mexico.
Band: Thank you very much.
How do you feel about being here in Mexico?
Band: We feel very happy, very excited. It’s our first time here and the reception has been great.
You come from Los Angeles. How is the scene there right now?
Band: Well, there are a lot of bands, a lot of competition. It’s not easy, but there is also a lot of creativity. You have to fight hard to stand out.
How long has Cirith Ungol been together?
Band: We’ve been together for many years. We started when we were very young, still in school. The band has grown with us.
Your music has been described as heavy, powerful, very intense. How do you define your own sound?
Band: We just play what we feel. We don’t try to fit into a label. We like heavy music, dark themes, strong riffs, and creating an atmosphere.
Who are your main influences?
Band: Bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin. Also classical music influences us in some ways.
Your name, Cirith Ungol, comes from fantasy literature. Why did you choose it?
Band: We are fans of fantasy and mythology. The name fits the mood of our music. It represents darkness, mystery, and epic stories.
You are here in Mexico to play live. What can people expect from your show?
Band: A lot of energy. We play with everything we have. We want people to feel the music, not just hear it.
You are playing tonight at the Salón Imperial and also at Skatorama in Lomas Verdes. What do you think about playing in different kinds of venues?
Band: It’s interesting. Each place has a different vibe. We like both, because what matters is the connection with the audience.
Do you know anything about Mexican rock bands?
Band: We are starting to learn. We’ve heard some bands and we think there is a lot of talent here.
What do you think about heavy rock and metal in Mexico?
Band: It’s very strong. The fans are very passionate. We can feel that people really care about the music.
Do you have any message for your fans here?
Band: Thank you for the support. We hope you enjoy the shows and that this is just the beginning of a long relationship with Mexico.
We remind you, friends of Rock 7, that tonight Cirith Ungol will be playing live. Don’t miss it. Stay tuned here on Rock 7, the station that supports rock music.
Cirith Ungol, entrevista
English translation from original reviews, photos, and contemporary press coverage, Chico Migraña, 07 Jul 2020.
Cirith Ungol played in Mexico more than thirty years ago — three decades have passed. What do you remember about that time, and what do you expect from this return?
Wow, there are so many memories.
We played once at the Whisky A Go Go — it was January 7, 1982 — and there was a person there from Mexico City named Efrén Bernal, who owned a record store called Flashman 2000 in Mexico City. He was there to do business with our record company at the time, which was Liquid Flame Records. That company imported and exported records all over the world.
He saw us play at the Whisky and told us he wanted to bring us to Mexico City. And so, on April 17, 1982, we played a dinner-show, although I don’t remember exactly what the venue was called. In fact, there were two dates: one at Salón Imperial and another at Skatorama in Lomas Verdes.
We played there with one of your legendary bands, Chac Mool — and honestly, when he said that, he completely won me over for the rest of the interview. It was a wonderful experience.
Then — I don’t remember if it was the night before or the night after — Efrén took us to one of the large plazas in Mexico City, but we ended up going into an underground radio station, literally. We went down a set of stairs; it was a place that had some kind of monument with a small house-like structure on top. And we did an interview there.
So our experience in Mexico City was simply spectacular. We will never forget it. And we truly, truly want to come back.
Rob, 2000: Greg was not with us then but I remember Mexico City fondly. We played two shows. One at a fancy dinner club rented for the occasion and one at an outdoor skating rink with thousands of people. We also did a radio interview with an underground radio station on top of the Presidential Palace. We made many friends and got to climb to the top of the Great Pyramid of the Sun, and go to the museum which housed many of the great treasures of your prehistory!
What is the exactly address? Were there other bands there? What is the setlist for all of the bands? What are the members then? Do you have photos, music or video that we can see or hear? What frequency has the radio Rock Punto 7 Radio? Any more fun facts at that time?
