In eighth grade, I stumbled on a cassette with the same cover art as one of my Elric novels. It was Cirith Ungol’s ‘Frost and Fire.’ This album – and the follow-up ‘King Of The Dead’ – played a massive role in my life. The music somehow made me feel less alone. It made me feel like some people looked at the world like I did. I played those cassettes threadbare on my Walkman through junior high school and onward. They were a life raft. I have loved the band for almost my entire life.
It was an exquisite honor and full circle experience to be asked to write the Decibel Magazine cover story on Cirith Ungol as they wind down their career (what this wind down entails depends on who is talking). This feature results from over 15 interviews, including famed fantasy artist Michael Whelan. I know a lot of dark stuff is happening in the world, but I put a lot of love into this story.
