Cirith Ungol is an American epic metal band, founded in 1972 as Titanic and credited with the name Cirith Ungol since 1977. They derive their name from the Cirith Ungol Pass, a place in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, which marks the entrance to the land of Mordor. Formed in Ventura, California, in the early 1970s, Cirith Ungol created a sound the world had never experienced before. Rather than passively channeling their influences, the band forged a heavier, darker, apocalyptic style, a HEAVY METAL with EPIC atmospheres and DOOM parts, dark and arcane, mysterious and eccentric, epic and expansive, but above all HEAVY!
