TIM: BLOOD AND DREAMS UPON THE SAND… BIBLICAL ENTITIES, ANCIENT EGYPTIANS, MAYANS, AZTECS. THEY ALL PRACTICED THE RITUAL OF HUMAN SACRIFICE FOR ONE TWISTED REASON OR ANOTHER, MAINLY TO APPEASE THEIR VARIOUS GODS AND TO GAIN SOME FORM OF FAVOR OR REWARD – WHETHER IN THIS LIFE OR IN THE AFTERLIFE MANY OF THOSE CULTURES BELIEVED IN. THROUGHOUT HISTORY INTO MODERN TIMES, WE ALL STILL HAVE TO MAKE MANY VARIOUS SACRIFICES IN OUR DAILY LIVES, AND ALTHOUGH SOME ARE PHYSICAL, NOT TO THE EXTENT OF TAKING HUMAN LIVES. BUT ARE THE SACRIFICES WE MAKE TODAY ANY WORSE OR WELL SERVED THAN THOSE MADE BY THE ANCIENTS? THE MUSIC ITSELF HAS VARIOUS ELEMENTS OF SPANISH AND EGYPTIAN STYLES WOVEN THROUGHOUT – AND YES, THAT IS AN AZTEC DEATH WHISTLE SCREAMING AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SONG.
JIMMY: THE SHORT CLASSICAL GUITAR INTRO RUN WAS RECORDED WHILE I WAS JUST MESSING AROUND IT FIT, AND CASTANETS SEEMED LOGICAL NEXT TO KICK OFF ANOTHER ATMOSPHERIC SONG WHICH TAKES PLACE IN CENTRAL MEXICO AROUND THE 14TH TO 16TH CENTURY. ORIGINALLY ROB CAME TO ME AND ASKED IF I COULD WRITE A AZTEC OR SPANISH FEELING METAL SONG, I TOOK THE CHALLENGE AND I’M VERY PLEASED HOW THE SONG TURNED OUT. IT’S SOMEWHAT UNIQUE BY CIRITH UNGOL STANDARDS AND NORMS.
ROB: I ENVISIONED A SONG BASED ON THE INCA OR AZTEC RITUAL HUMAN SACRIFICE WHEN WE WERE WORKING ON IT. I KEPT SENDING THE BAND PERIOD PICTURES OF THOSE SACRIFICES TO GET EVERYONE PSYCHED INTO THE THEME. I EVEN BOUGHT SOME CASTANETS AND STARTED PRACTICING AND WANTED TO PLAY THEM THROUGHOUT THE SONG, UNFORTUNATELY COOLER HEADS PREVAILED AND ARMAND WON THE CASTANETS CLACK OFF CONTEST AND GOT TO DO THE HONORS. JIMMY WAS WRITING A WHOLE SPANISH ACOUSTIC GUITAR INTRO, WHICH WAS FANTASTIC, BUT ARMAND RECORDED HIM MESSING AROUND IN THE STUDIO, AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE THE PERFECT PRELUDE. ALL OUR SONGS WERE GETTING LONGER, SO TO KEEP THE LENGTH DOWN TO WHAT IS OPTIMUM FOR THE LP THIS INTRO AND A FEW OTHER PARTS OF SONGS WERE SHORTENED, TO MAKE YOUR LISTENING EXPERIENCED ENHANCED. THANKFULLY I GOT TO USE MY COWBELL OF DOOM TO MAKE A DISTINCTLY LATIN BEAT DURING THE SOLO SECTION WHICH IS MY FAVORITE BEAT ON THE ALBUMI JIMMY’S SOLO IS EXCELLENT ON THIS SONG, AS WELL AS JARVIS’S POUNDING BASS!

The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican civilization that flourished in central Mexico in the post-classic period from 1300 to 1521. The Aztec people included different ethnic groups of central Mexico, particularly those groups who spoke the Nahuatl language and who dominated large parts of Mesoamerica from the 14th to the 16th centuries. I think they all of them were very fascinating with their own maths, mythology, symbols, planets, calendar, pyramid, culture, and so on.
