Lyrics
On and on and on
On into forever
On and on and on
Sailor on the seas of fateIn a world of no tomorrows, where no hope could ever be
To claim a final respite from this bane of bitter dreams
We turn our vision downward, then outward towards the sea
Set our course, set our sights, set out to be freeOn and on and on
On into forever
On and on and on
Sailor on the seas of fateSo we cast aside our kingdom, cast aside the ruby throne
Let the winds of fortune guide us to a peace we’ve never known
Will we find a land of struggle filled with darkness, fear, and hate
Or will we finally end this journey and realize our fate?On and on and on
On into forever
On and on and on
Sailor on the seas of fateTurning, gazing one last time, a future unforeseen
Pushing from the shore, pushing on toward destiny
Wipe the tears of sorrow, of the choices that we’ve made
All we have is chaos, and our rune encrusted bladeOn and on and on
On into forever
On and on and on

From the majestic eight-minute-long βSailor On The Seas Of Fate,β which starts with a reflective arpeggio and builds into a pounding, near-tribal volley before segueing into a bleak, slow burn of retribution and agony, to the final three movements of the βDark Paradeβ saga (comprised of βDark Parade,β βDistant Shadows,β and βDown Belowβ), CIRITH UNGOLβs latest album offers a metallic soundtrack of societal decay and environmental collapse that foreshadows nothing less than total extinction.
“It’s about what happens when we sell that which we hold dear,” Baker says. “Our soul — if such a thing exists — our dignity, pride, and whatever else we have that will help seal the deal in an endless pursuit of money, power, glory and dominion over others.” From the majestic eight-minute-long “Sailor on the Seas of Fate,” which starts with a reflective arpeggio and builds into a pounding, near-tribal volley before segueing into a bleak, slow burn of retribution and agony, to the final three movements of the “Dark Parade,” saga (comprised of “Dark Parade,” “Distant Shadows,” and “Down Below”), Cirith Ungol’s latest album offers a metallic soundtrack of societal decay and environmental collapse that foreshadows nothing less than total extinction. TIM: SET OUR COURSE, SET OUR SIGHTS, AND SET OUT TO THE FREE… OSTENSIBLY A SONG ABOUT THE TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF THE TITULAR ANTI-HERO THAT CRACES ALL OF OUR ALBUM COVERS – ELRIC AND THE BLACK BLADE STORMBRINGER.
IN REALITY THOUGH, I WROTE THIS AS A PAEAN TO THE NEVER ENDING SEARCH MOST OF US SHARE FOR THE MEANING OF THINGS – AND THE IMAGE OF THE SAILOR AND THE ENDLESS SEAS HAVE ALWAYS CONJURED UP THE DREAM OF DISCOVERY AND ADVENTURE. NEW DREAMS, NEW HORIZONS, NEW LIVES FEAR, WONDER, PAIN, JOY, LIFE AND DEATH – ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE ON THE SEAS OF FATE. WHICH PATHS YOU CHOOSE WILL DECIDE… I DEBATED EVEN MAKING, THIS SONG HAVE A “SWORD AND SORCERY” THEME. I THINK I ONLY WOULD HAVE HAD TO CHANGE ABOUT SIX WORDS TO HAVE NO MENTION OF IT AT ALL. BUT GIVING THE SONG A SPECIFIC SUBJECT I DECIDED, HELPED GIVE THE SONG MORE FOCUS AND DEPTH AND AFTER ALL, WHAT WOULD A CIRITH UNGOL ALBUM BE WITHOUT AT LEAST A BIT OF SWORD AND SORCERY!!
JIMMY: I CONSIDER THIS TO BE MORE OF AN ATMOSPHERIC SONG THAT HOPEFULLY TAKES THE LISTENER ON A JOURNEY SOMEWHERE. AT MIDPOINT OF THE SONG WHERE THE PACE PICKS UP, IT WAS DONE AS AN INTENTIONAL SORT OF THROWBACK FEEL TO THE SONG LIKE “CHAOS RISING” ON PARADISE LOST ALBUM. I REALLY LIKE HOW THE ENDING OUTRO CAME OUT BY WINDING DOWN, AND FINALLY ENDING WITH A THUNDER STORM BREWING IN THE DISTANCE.
GREG: THAT’S MY PRS WITH WHAMMY BAR ON THE OUTRO SOLO. IF YOU LISTEN CLOSELY, YOU CAN HEAR A HAMMOND B3 THROUGHOUT THE SONG – NOT! IT’S ACTUALLY ME PLAYING GUITAR THROUGH AN ELECTRO HARMONIX C9 ORGAN MACHINE PEDAL SET TO THE (JON) LORD SETTING. SOUNDS PRETTY CONVINCING TO ME AND MUCH EASIER TO CARRY!
ROB: I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED WITH ROMANS (I LOVE EVERYTHING ITALIAN!) AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCENES IN A MOVIE IS FROM THE [18 NOV] 1959 EPIC BEN HUR, WHERE ON A SLAVE GALLEY THE ROWERS ROWED TO THE BEAT OF A ROMAN POUNDING GIANT HAMMERS ON A LEATHER CAPPED STOOL.
THIS WAS THE WHOLE THEME BEHIND THE SONG IN MY MIND, AND I RECORDED OVERDUBBED TOMS TO RECREATE THAT PART, EVEN CHANGING TO THE RAMMING SPEED TEMPO NEAR THE END OF THE SONG. WE PUT THE OCEAN BOAT CREAKING AND GULL AT THE BEGINNING AND THUNDER AND MORE CREAKING AT THE END TO GIVE THE LISTENER THE FEELING THAT THIS WAS THE DEFINITELY THE MARITIME SONG ON THE ALBUM! I ESPECIALLY LIKED GREG’S ORGAN GUITAR EFFECT AND ENDING LEADS. I ALSO GOT TO USE MY BOXING BELL, WHICH I HAVE HAD ON MY SETS SINCE THE 1970’S, NEVER ON AN ALBUM TILL NOW AND THE GONG!
