Si eres de los que te gusta el tradicional Doom Metal con letras que hablan de fantasía, problemas humanos, y ciencia ficción, te invitamos a que conozcas de la actualidad de estos pioneros del género en la siguiente entrevista que Conexión Rock Radio les ofrece a nuestros lectores en Latinoamérica y resto del mundo.
En esta oportunidad establecemos contacto hasta California, Estados Unidos para conversar con Tim Baker, Vocalista de la banda Cirith Ungol, quienes viven un importante momento en su carrera con el lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum Forever Black vía Metal Blade Records, y que rompen un silencio discográfico de casi 30 años desde su última entrega Paradise Lost de 1991.
Cirith Ungol actualmente está conformado por Greg Lindstrom y Jim Barraza- Guitarras, Robert Garven- Batería, Tim Baker- Vocales, y Jarvis Leatherby- Bajo.
En esta entrevista conoceremos los detalles de la producción del álbum, concepto, historia y el prometedor futuro que esta banda hará a través de un llamado para que todas sus legiones se levanten.
Conexión Rock Radio: Tim, saludos desde Honduras, Centroamérica, un honor tenerte aquí en este reporte especial para nuestra audiencia que desean saber de las próximas noticias que una gran banda como Cirith Ungol tiene para sus fans en este año, bienvenido!
Tim Baker: Gracias a ti por el interés de conversar de la banda en esta oportunidad, y les enviamos de parte de todos en Latinoamérica y resto del mundo nuestros mejores deseos contra esta epidemia que está azotando el mundo.

CR: Inicio esta entrevista en felicitar a la banda por el lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum llamado Forever Black, y que salio recientemente vía Metal Blade Records.
¿Qué expectativas tienen ustedes en este nuevo e interesante capitulo en su historia?
TB: La verdad no estamos seguros en asuntos de expectativas, excepto que esperamos que a nuestros fans les guste el nuevo álbum!
CR: ¿Como se sienten ustedes en volver como banda después de muchos años?
TB: Se siente genial, todos en la banda están muy emocionados de estar de nuevo juntos, y hacer nueva música tras muchos años de no entrar a un estudio.
CR: Curiosamente este álbum rompe un silencio de 29 años cuando la banda lanzo Paradise Lost en 1991, que causas tuvieron ustedes para esta larga ausencia?
TB: Las causas fueron muchas y muy bien documentadas, estoy seguro de que la mayoría de nuestros fans conocen todas esas historias de dificultades y luchas.
Tratamos de no detenernos demasiado en el pasado, y no hace falta decir que estamos ansiosos por lo que depara el futuro.
CR: En 2019 lanzan su primer álbum en vivo: I’m Alive
¿Qué experiencias les ha dejado la banda en hacer este álbum y reencontrarse con sus fans?
TB: La respuesta a que la banda volvió a estar unida y especialmente a tocar en festivales de todo el mundo ha sido increíble y pensamos que tener un documento de esto no solo para los fanáticos, ¡sino para nosotros sería genial! tremendo y realmente brilla a través de I’m Alive!!
CR: Deseamos saber cuál es el concepto que hay detrás de Forever Black?
Muchos consideran que es un álbum que mantiene su esencia intacta inyectando en su sonido aire fresco.
Es una historia completa o separada entre los tracks?
TB: Bueno, la forma en que lo describo es que el primer lado del álbum representa el Caos, el cual lo representa el primer single Legions Arise que hace un llamado a las armas, el resto del lado uno está sólidamente basado en nuestro canon de espadas y hechiceros.
El lado dos lo describo como distopía, canciones que representan el lado oscuro de la lucha eterna del hombre y nuestro estado actual de las pesadillas orwellianas.
CR: ¿Como se siente Cirith Ungol en ser parte de un sello que es considerado como la cuna de varias bandas legendarias a nivel mundial como Metal Blade?
TB: Con Metal Blade hemos lanzado varios albums en el pasado, uno de ellos fue One Foot in Hell, también aparecimos en las compilaciones de Metal Massacre, ellos reeditaron luego varios trabajos en su catálogo, y lo último fue este reciente álbum en vivo.
Nuestra historia con MB y Brian Slagel se remonta mucho antes de que él comenzara con la idea del sello, y nos honra trabajar con ellos una vez más, son uno de los íconos del heavy metal en todo el mundo.
CR: Sabemos que la mayoría de la formación son los mismos que han estado desde 1972 hasta su reunión en 2015, a excepción de Jarvis Leatherby quien se une Cirith en 2016, de hecho, este sería su primer álbum en estudio con la banda.
¿Como se sienten ustedes con Jarvis ahora tocando en la banda?
TB: ¡Es genial! Jarvis es un músico sólido y una excelente presencia en el escenario, además de ser una persona muy versátil dentro del negocio de la música.
¡Todos nos llevamos muy bien y espero que se muestre en las grabaciones y durante nuestros shows en vivo!
CR: La música de Cirith ha unido a los fans de toda una vida y a los nuevos que se unen en el camino en los últimos años.
Que impresiones tienes de este relevo generacional que la banda experimenta en sus conciertos?
TB: ¡Ha sido simplemente fantástico! ¡El apoyo y el amor que hemos recibido de los fanáticos, tanto antiguos como nuevos, es verdaderamente humilde y no podemos agradecerles lo suficiente por todo!
CR: Muchas bandas de Heavy y Doom Metal de alrededor del mundo miran en Cirith como una influencia, que piensas de ello?
Tim: ¡Increíblemente genial! Siempre es un honor cuando se mencionan cosas como esa, y siempre tratamos de hacer los mejores álbumes que pudimos hacer.
Hemos sido llamados de todo, desde “La peor banda de metal de todos los tiempos” hasta “Los padrinos del Doom Metal Épico” y espero que la verdad esté en algún punto intermedio entre todo eso … pero es increíble que después de todos estos años la gente todavía escuche nuestros álbumes más antiguos y obtenga algo de ellos.
Muy muy asombroso.
CR: Tu voz se ha mantenido intacta durante todos estos años, al punto que dicen muchos fans: Tim vive una segunda juventud, que comentarios tienes al respecto?
TB: ¡Ojalá la parte sobre la segunda juventud fuera cierta jaja! Pero no hay comentarios sobre eso realmente, así es como sueno, y tomamos un descanso de 25 años, por lo que probablemente no me ha afectado todo este tiempo.
CR: La banda en toda su historia ha lanzado excelentes trabajos, desde tu punto de vista, existe alguna fórmula para que Cirith Ungol tenga una interesante discografía sin albums infravalorados?
TB: Nunca pensé personalmente en cómo se clasifican la banda o los álbumes. Para mí, nunca ha importado siempre y cuando hicimos lo mejor que pudimos hacer y nos mantuvimos fieles a nuestra visión colectiva del Metal.
En realidad, eso es todo lo que podríamos hacer.
Siempre ha sido decisión de quien nos escuche.
CR: Hablando de clásicos… Frost and Fire próximamente cumplirá 40 años
Estas a favor o en contra de muchas bandas revisiten albums clásicos en vivo?
TB: Sé que muchas bandas tienen lo que se describe como su álbum “icónico” y los fanáticos quieren escucharlos en su totalidad, y la mayoría de las veces es genial que escuchen a los fanáticos y los hagan. He estado en un par de shows donde las bandas hicieron eso y ¡fue genial! Lo hicimos hace un par de años en el festival Hammer of Doom, donde repasamos lo mejor de nuestros primeros 4 álbumes en orden, ¡un espectáculo bastante agotador de 2 1/2 horas, pero valió la pena!
CR: Haz tenido algún comentario de otras bandas sobre los fans en Latinoamérica?
Sabemos que ustedes tocaron años atrás en México para 1000 personas y no 10 mil como comentaban muchos en una leyenda urbana, una vez que esta emergencia que nos está afectando a todos termine tienes planes de hacer alguna gira por nuestra región?
TB: Realmente amamos a nuestros fanáticos latinoamericanos, y siempre han sido algunos de nuestros seguidores más leales a lo largo de los años. Tocamos en Brasil el año pasado, lo cual fue increíble y esperamos poder seguir tocando el festival Candelabrum planeado en México a finales de este año. Nos encantaría hacer más shows en esa parte del mundo y esperamos que eso suceda en un futuro no muy lejano.
CR: Cual es el mensaje que deseas enviar a quienes nos leen en este reporte, y gracias Tim por responder a nuestras preguntas en Conexión Rock Radio
TB: Como acabo de mencionar, los amamos y esperamos verlos lo antes posible. Gracias de nuevo por todos los años de amor y apoyo para Ungol, y espero que algún día vivamos el sueño juntos.
CR: Tim, muchas gracias por tu tiempo! This time we made contact to California, United States to talk with Tim Baker, Vocalist of the band Cirith Ungol, who live an important moment in their career with the release of their new album Forever Black via Metal Blade Records, and who break a silence record label of almost 30 years since its last installment Paradise Lost in 1991.
Cirith Ungol is currently conformed by Greg Lindstrom and Jim Barraza- Guitars, Robert Garven- Drums, Tim Baker- Vocals, and Jarvis Leatherby- Bass.

Conexion Rock Radio: Tim, greetings from Honduras, Central America, an honor to have you here in this special report for our audience who want to know about the next news that a great band like Cirith Ungol has for their fans this year, welcome!
Tim Baker: Thanks to you for your interest in talking about the band this time, and we send you all from Latin America and the rest of the world our best wishes against this epidemic that is plaguing the world.

CR: Start this interview in congratulating the band for the release of their new album called Forever Black, and that it came out recently via Metal Blade Records.
What expectations do you have in this new and interesting chapter in your story?
TB: We really aren’t sure about expectations, except that we hope our fans will like the new album!
CR: How do you feel about coming back as a band after many years?
TB: It feels great, everyone in the band is very excited to be back together, and to make new music after many years of not going into a studio.
CR: Curiously, this album breaks a 29-year silence when the band released Paradise Lost in 1991, what causes did you have for this long absence?
TB: The causes were many and very well documented, I am sure that most of our fans know all those stories of difficulties and struggles.
We try not to dwell too much on the past, and it goes without saying that we are eager for what the future holds.
CR: In 2019 release their first live album: I’m Alive
What experiences has the band left you in making this album and reuniting with your fans?
TB: The response to the band getting back together and especially playing at festivals around the world has been incredible and we thought having a document of this not just for the fans, but for us would be great! tremendous and really shines through I’m Alive !!
CR: We want to know what is the concept behind Forever Black?
Many consider it to be an album that keeps its essence intact by injecting fresh air into its sound.
Is it a complete or separate story between the tracks?
TB: Well, the way I describe it is that the first side of the album represents Chaos, which is represented by the first single Legions Arise that calls for arms, the rest of side one is solidly based on our canon of swords and sorcerers.
Side two I describe as dystopia, songs that represent the dark side of man’s eternal struggle and our current state of Orwellian nightmares.
CR: How does Cirith Ungol feel about being part of a label that is considered the cradle of several legendary bands worldwide like Metal Blade?
TB: With Metal Blade we have released several albums in the past, one of them was One Foot in Hell, we also appeared on the Metal Massacre compilations, they later reissued several works in their catalog, and the latest was this recent live album.
Our history with MB and Brian Slagel dates back long before he started the label idea, and we are honored to work with them once again, they are one of the heavy metal icons around the world.
CR: We know that most of the lineup is the same as they have been from 1972 until your reunion in 2015, except for Jarvis Leatherby who joins Cirith in 2016, in fact, this would be your first studio album with the band.
How do you feel with Jarvis now playing in the band?
TB: It’s great! Jarvis is a solid musician and an excellent stage presence, as well as being a very versatile person in the music business.
We all get along very well and I hope it shows on the recordings and during our live shows!
CR: Cirith’s music has brought together lifelong fans and newcomers joining along the way in recent years.
What impressions do you have of this generational relay that the band experiences in their concerts?
TB: It was just fantastic! The support and love that we have received from fans, both old and new, is truly humble and we can´t thank you enough for everything!
CR: Many Heavy and Doom Metal bands from around the world look at Cirith as an influence, what do you think about it?
Tim: Unbelievably cool! It’s always an honor when things like that are mentioned, and we always try to make the best albums we can make.
We’ve been called everything from “The Worst Metal Band of All Time” to “The Godfathers of Epic Doom Metal” and I hope the truth is somewhere in the middle of all that … but it’s amazing that after all these years people still listen to our oldest albums and get something out of them.
Very very amazing.
CR: Your voice has remained intact during all these years, to the point that many fans say: Tim lives a second youth, what comments do you have about it?
TB: I wish the part about the second youth was true haha! But no comment on that really, this is what I sound like, and we took a 25 year break, so it probably hasn’t affected me all this time.
CR: The band in all its history has released excellent works, from your point of view, is there any formula for Cirith Ungol to have an interesting discography without underrated albums?
TB: I never personally thought about how the band or albums are classified. For me, it has never mattered as long as we did the best we could do and stayed true to our collective vision of Metal. Actually, that’s all we could do. It has always been the listener’s decision to decide.
CR: Speaking of classics… Frost and Fire will soon be 40 years old
Are you for or against many bands revisiting live classic albums?
TB: I know a lot of bands have what is described as their “iconic” album and the fans want to hear it in its entirety, and most of the time it’s great that they listen to the fans and do it. I’ve been to a couple of shows where the bands did that and it was great! We did it a couple of years ago at the Hammer of Doom festival, where we reviewed the best of our first 4 albums in order, a pretty exhausting 2 1/2 hour show, but it was worth it!
CR: Have you had any comments from other bands about fans in Latin America?
We know that you played years ago in Mexico for 1000 people and not 10 thousand as many commented in an urban legend, once this emergency that is affecting us all ends, do you have plans to do a tour of our region?
TB: We really love our Latin American fans, and they have always been some of our most loyal fans over the years. We played in Brazil last year, which was amazing and we look forward to continuing to play the Candelabrum festival planned in Mexico later this year. We would love to do more shows in that part of the world and we hope that will happen in the not too distant future.
CR: What is the message you want to send to those who read us in this report, and thank you Tim for answering our questions on Conexión Rock Radio
TB: As I just mentioned, we love you and hope to see you as soon as possible. Thanks again for all the years of love and support for Ungol, and I hope that one day we will live the dream together.
