    Author’s note

A version of this novel was originally published in the United States by Lancer Books in 1967. This new edition publishes for the first time in any country the full text of the original novel serialized in the English Science Fantasy magazine published 1963-1964. All previous editions have appeared with a quarter of the original text cut from them. This version has also been revised by the author from the original magazine version. The earlier, abridged edition, was originally published in England by Herbert Jenkins, Ltd., 1965.

    Contents

    4. BOOK THREE: Sad Giant’s Shield (Section One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six)
    5. BOOK FOUR: Doomed Lord’s Passing (Section One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six)
    Back side

“There came a time when there was a great movement
upon the Earth and above it, when the destiny of Men and
Gods was hammered out upon the forge of Fate,
when monstrous wars were brewed and mighty deeds
were designed. And there rose up in this time, which was
called the Age of the Young Kingdoms, heroes.
Greatest of these heroes was a doom-driven adventurer
who bore a crooning rune blade that he loathed.

“His name was Elric of Melnibone, king of ruins, lord of
a scattered race that had once ruled the ancient world.
Elric, sorcerer and swordsman, slayer of kin, despoiler
of his homeland, white-faced albino, last of his line.”
    ― from the Prologue.

After five mighty books, the fabled saga of Elric
and the sword Stormbringer reaches terrific climax in
this the sixth and final novel. Here, contained, is
the last great strife of Elric in a world of barbaric forces,
decadent powers, and champions of Doom. Here
is the culmination of all the adventures, the Ragnarok of
    Michael Moorcock’s most famed epic.

Yet, like all the Elric books, it can be read as a whole unit
without references to the previous books. It is complete
in itself. In fact, this is the first appearance of the full and
original novel, authorized and revised by Michael
    Moorcock for DAW Books.
