Robert E. Howard (22 Jan 1906 – 11 Jun 1936) created the character Conan the Barbarian and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre.
It was mentioned in many interviews that Cirith Ungol has influenced for Conan, and also the painter Frank Frazetta was Cirith Ungol first choice and Whelan was the second choice. Frazetta had the fantasy figure Conan: “At the time we wanted a “Sword and Sorcery” theme cover called “Berserker” by Frank Frazetta, a famous sword and sorcery artist.” The painting Berserker was also the book named Conan the Conqueror Vol. 3. See also the film in 1982, which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others.
Elric The Necromancer (1965-73)
Philippe Druillet‘s first published series was his version of Michael Moorcock’s Elric stories in a short-lived magazine. His first book, Lone Sloane – Le Mystère des Abîmes (“Tome 1”), appeared in 1966 on French. It introduced his recurring hero Lone Sloane and played on science-fiction themes partially inspired by his favourite writers, H. P. Lovecraft and A.E. van Vogt.
The very first comic is the children’s magazine “Moi aussi – la revue adulte pour les jeunes” in 08 Dec 1966 in color, picture #1 (white background). The “Moi aussi” book 2 (reference from Jayde Design, 1997) is possibly with Elric. Have you seen the Moi aussi book 1 and 2? Picture #2 (brown background) is the collection was Elric Le Necromancien (18 Nov 1969), the text is mostly translated into French, but a few black and white Elric comic in the book. Elric le Nécromancien comic is possibly inside Spirits: Revue de Bande Dessinee No. 1 (~1971), picture #3 (purple background). The backside is Virgil Finlay‘s illustration for “The Call from Beyond”. The Spirits: Revue de Bande Dessinee No. 2 (~1971) is maybe featuring Elric. Last but not least, the magazine La saga d’Elric le Nécromancien (1971 or 1972 on Moorcography) was published, picture #4 (black background).
Re-released on Unicorn Bookshop (1973, purple background) (ISFDB), Jayde Design (1997 white background) (ISFDB), La saga d’Elric le Nécromancien (French, May 2018) and The Michael Moorcock Library: Elric The Eternal Champion Collection (English, 23 Feb 2023) and Elric: The Necromancer #1 (English/French 17 Jul 2024). Druillet later his Elric books Yragael (1974) and Urm le fou (1975). Also see Heavy Metal Magazine, some of which was later Slayer‘s artwork then, Conan, Fritz Leiber, Bram Stoker, Lovecraft and other artwork.
