These stations are known for underground / metal programming, but direct proof of CU airplay is not currently confirmed:

  • KXLU 88.9 MHz FM (Los Angeles, CA) – college radio station known for underground and heavy music programming.
  • KUSF 90.3 MHz FM (San Francisco, CA) – college radio station with dedicated metal specialty shows.
  • KPFK 90.7 MHz FM (Los Angeles, CA) – Pacifica Network station with specialty rock and metal programming.
  • KSJO 92.3 MHz FM (San Jose, CA) – rock/metal station known for late-night specialty programs.
  • KLSX 97.1 MHz FM (Greater Los Angeles, CA) – alternative rock format; unlikely to have played Cirith Ungol due to format focus.
    • The film Sunset Strip (2012) features radio personality Riki Rachtman, who was associated with KLSX during its modern rock era.
    • CU history: KGBS (1976–1978), KHTZ (1978–1985), KBZT (1985–1986), KLSX (1986–2009)
  • KZAP 98.5 MHz FM (Sacramento, CA) – early AOR / hard rock station; possible early underground exposure (later became KRXQ).
  • KQLZ 100.3 MHz FM (“Pirate Radio 100.3”) – active under this branding from 1989 to 1993.
    • The “Pirate K-ROCK” listing at Club Soda (1990/91) does not appear to refer to a band, but instead likely refers to the radio brand KQLZ (“Pirate Radio”).
  • KROQ 106.7 MHz FM (“K-Rock”) – 1973–present.
