It was mentioned in many interviews that Cirith Ungol has influenced for Conan, and also the painter Frank Frazetta was Cirith Ungol first choice and Whelan was the second choice. Frazetta had the fantasy figure Conan: “At the time we wanted a โSword and Sorceryโ theme cover called โBerserkerโ by Frank Frazetta, a famous sword and sorcery artist.” The painting Berserker was also the book named Conan the Conqueror Vol. 3. See also the film in 1982, which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others.

Philippe Druillet‘s first published series was his version of Michael Moorcock’s Elric stories in a short-lived magazine. His first book, Lone Sloane – Le Mystรจre des Abรฎmes (“Tome 1”), appeared in 1966 on French.ย It introduced his recurring heroย Lone Sloaneย and played on science-fiction themes partially inspired by his favourite writers,ย H. P. Lovecraftย andย A.E. van Vogt.ย

The very first comic is the childrenโs magazine โMoi aussi โ la revue adulte pour les jeunesโ in 08 Dec 1966 in color, picture #1 (white background). The โMoi aussiโ book 2 (reference from Jayde Design, 1997) is possibly with Elric. Have you seen the Moi aussi book 1 and 2? Picture #2 (brown background) is the collection was Elric Le Necromancien (18 Nov 1969), the text is mostly translated into French, but a few black and white Elric comic in the book. Elric le Nรฉcromancien comic is possibly inside Spirits: Revue de Bande Dessinee No. 1 (~1971), picture #3 (purple background). The backside is Virgil Finlayโs illustration for โThe Call from Beyondโ. The Spirits: Revue de Bande Dessinee No. 2 (~1971) is maybe featuring Elric. Last but not least, the magazine La saga dโElric le Nรฉcromancien (1971 or 1972 on Moorcography) was published, picture #4 (black background).
Re-released on Unicorn Bookshop (1973, purple background) (ISFDB), Jayde Design (1997 white background) (ISFDB),ย La saga dโElric le Nรฉcromancien (French, May 2018) and The Michael Moorcock Library: Elric The Eternal Champion Collection (English, 23 Feb 2023) and Elric: The Necromancer #1 (English/French 17 Jul 2024). Druillet later his Elric books Yragael (1974) and Urm le fou (1975). Also see Heavy Metal Magazine, some of which was later Slayer‘s artwork then, Conan, Fritz Leiber, Bram Stoker, Lovecraft and other artwork.
Conan the Barbarian and Elric of Melnibonรฉ
The first Conan is on Weird Tales (Dec 1932) featuring the chapter โThe Phoenix on the Swordโ. And the first Elric is on Science Fantasy (Jun 1961) featuring the chapter “The Dreaming City“. Both are novels, but there are a few paintings as well.ย

Elric first appeared in comics in USA 1972, in Conan the Barbarian issues #14โ15 (MarchโMay 1972), an adventure in two parts entitled “A Sword Called Stormbringer!” and โThe Green Empress of Melnibonรฉโ. The comic was written by Roy Thomasย and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith, based on a story plotted by Michael Moorcock and James Cawthorn. There is two comic Elric from Conan 14 Mar and 15 May 1972, and a couple of compilation. There are also many others with comic Elric later.
