Elric The Necromancer (1965-73)spirits number 1 revue de bande dessinee front cover Conan and Elric | Cirith Ungol Online

On Wikipedia it was written “In 1968, the French artist Philippe Druillet drew the first comics version of Elric in Spirits #1, written by Michel Demuth, which was published as a book the same year.” On Spirits: Revue de Bande Dessinee No. 1, the back cover is Virgil Finlay‘s illustration for “The Call from Beyond”.

Possibly there is two issues, #1 Elric Le Necromancien (18 Nov 1969) or Spirits No. 1 (~1971) and #2 Elric The Return To Melnibone (Unicorn Bookshop, 1973) or Spirits No. 2 (~1971).

Philippe Druillet’s first published series was his version of Michael Moorcock’s Elric stories in a short-lived magazine. His first book, Le Mystère des abîmes (The Mystery of the Abyss), appeared in 1966. It introduced his recurring hero Lone Sloane and played on science-fiction themes partially inspired by his favourite writers, H. P. Lovecraft and A.E. van Vogt

Possibly the magazine “moi aussi – la revue adulte pour les jeunes” in Dec 1966 featuring Elric.

Re-release on La saga d’Elric le Nécromancien (French, May 2018) and The Michael Moorcock Library: Elric The Eternal Champion Collection (English, 23 Feb 2023).

Elric of Melniboné vs Conan the Barbarian

Robert E. Howard (22 Jan 1906 – 11 Jun 1936) created the character Conan the Barbarian and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre. It was mentioned in many interviews that Cirith Ungol has influenced for Conan.

Elric first appeared in comics in USA 1972, in Conan the Barbarian issues #14–15 (March–May 1972), an adventure in two parts entitled “A Sword Called Stormbringer!” and “The Green Empress of Melniboné”. The comic was written by Roy Thomas and illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith, based on a story plotted by Michael Moorcock and James Cawthorn. There is two comic Elric from Conan 14 Mar and 15 May 1972, and a couple of compilation. There are also many others with comic Elric later.

This was long before on Elric of Melniboné on DAW Books, Oct 1976. See also the film in 1982, which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others.

Short, for the first times on Conan and Elric:

    • Weird Tales (Dec 1932) featuring “The Phoenix on the Sword”. Conan first time appeared here.
    • Science Fantasy (Jun 1961) featuring “The Dreaming City”. Elric first time appeared here.
    • Spirits – Revue De Bande Dessinée No. 1 (1968) French comic magazine featuring Elric probably appeared first time here.
